Athletics: Junior Olympic Cross Country Champs begin in Rhode Island

INDIANAPOLIS - More than 2,500 athletes are expected to compete at the 2005 USATF National Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships Saturday, December 10, 2005 at Bryant University in Smithfield, Rhode Island.

Winter storms in the area may require course changes, but the races will go on. Athletes will have to brave in what is expected to be a snowy course.

USATF's Junior Olympic cross country program is made up of preliminary meets in many of USATF's 57 local Associations, which lead to their Association Championships, and then to 15 Regional Championships.

USATF Junior Olympic program Age divisions were bantam (10 and under), and racing over 3 kilometers; midget (11-12), and racing 3 km; youth (13-14), and racing 4 km; intermediate (15-16) and racing 5 km; young men/women (17-18) and racing 5 km, and high school, racing 5 km.

Individual winners returning to compete include Kaylor Murray (Nashville, Illusions) in the 2004 bantam division, 10:58 and Nicole Hood (Pleasanton Heat) 2004 midget division winner, 10:46.

On the boy's side Darren Fahy (San Diego SoCal Road Run) 2004 bantam boys winner, 10:27 will return.
