Posted: January 3, 2006 Athletics: 2 more World Champs at Reebok Boston Indoor Games BOSTON (Jan. 3) – A pair of 2005 World Championships gold medalists – sprinter Lauryn Williams and shot putter Adam Nelson – have been added to the field for the 11th annual Reebok Boston Indoor Games on Jan. 28, organizers announced today. The 22-year-old Williams, one of the brightest young American stars in the sport, brought home two gold medals (100m, 4x100m relay) from last year’s World Championships, after surging into the limelight with her silver medal from the 2004 Olympics. A 2004 graduate of the University of Miami and the 2004 NCAA 100m champion, Williams will be making her Reebok Boston Indoor Games debut. Nelson, 30, will return to defend his 2005 Reebok Boston Indoor Games shot put title, a victory that launched him toward a triumphant, career-best season and the world’s #1 ranking. A two-time Olympic silver medalist and three-time World Championships runner-up, the popular American thrower shook off his Athens disappointment and subsequent thoughts of retirement to finally earn his long-sought gold medal in Helsinki. The high-energy fan favorite will be challenged by the USA trio of four-time World Champion John Godina; 2004 World Indoor Champion Christian Cantwell; and 2004 World Indoor silver medalist Reese Hoffa. Over the past decade, the Reebok Boston Indoor Games, produced by Boston-based Global Athletics & Marketing, Inc., has been the site of four World Records and eight American Records. For the past three years, the event has sold out. The 11th-annual Reebok Boston Indoor Games will be held at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center at Roxbury Community College, 1350 Tremont St., from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Jan. 28, and will be broadcast Jan. 29 on ESPN2 from 3-4:30 p.m. It is the first stop on USA Track & Field’s Visa Championship Series. Tickets and information are now available on-line at www.BostonIndoorGames.com or by calling 1-866-GO-BIG06. Comment on this story. |
