Athletics: January 16th is Deadline for Application for Ottawa Race Weekend Athletic Scholarship

The Ottawa Race Weekend Athletic Scholarship is intended to assist aspiring Canadian distance athletes

Award requirements:
• Athlete must be a Canadian citizen.
• Athlete must attend a post-secondary educational institution as a full-time student for the 2006-2007 academic year.
• Athlete must expect to earn under $20,000 from all sources in 2006 (including any grants or scholarships). This does NOT include any expected provincial or federal student loans.
• Athlete should be available to come to Ottawa to receive the award (the ORW will provide transportation and accommodation).
• Athlete should participate (compete and/or volunteer) in the 2006 Ottawa Race Weekend on May 27th – 28th.
• Previous winners may not apply.

Award Criteria:

Applicants will be judged based on their financial need, athletic accomplishments, athletic potential, running/community contributions and scholastic grades.

Award: $3000 CDN

Prospective applicants are encouraged to complete the following application and submit it to:

Applications must be received by January 16th, 2006, in order to be considered. The award winner will be notified by March 13th, 2006.

Congratulations to Rebecca Stallwood of Burlington, Ontario who was the 2005 scholarship recipient. After accepting the award Rebecca competed in the MDS Nordion 10K and placed 10th in the women’s division.

About the Ottawa Race Weekend
The Ottawa Race Weekend, Canada's premier running festival, combines competition, participation and fundraising to make a distinctive contribution to the health of the community. The 2005 Race Weekend had over 26,000 participants in 9 races, including the ING Ottawa Marathon and the MDS Nordion 10K. It is run by a volunteer Board of Directors. This year, the Race Weekend is scheduled for the May 26-28 weekend.
