Posted: January 10, 2006 Athletics: Bekele Set For 1500 In Karlsruhe From David Monti © 2005 Race Results Weekly, all rights reserved RaceResultsWeekly.com By Bob Ramsak While the announcement that Kenenisa Bekele will race in the Wannamaker Mile at the Millrose Games on Feb. 3 took many by surprise, it won't be his debut over the 1500/mile distance after all. Organizers of the BW-Bank-Meeting in Karlsruhe, Germany, announced today that the 23-year-old Ethiopian will contest the 1500 meters at the Jan. 29 competition, five days before his match-up against two-time Olympic 1500 meter medallist Bernard Lagat. Who the reigning world and Olympic 10,000 meter champion will face in Karlsruhe has yet to be determined, but organizers announced that Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya, the 2004 Olympic bronze medallist at 5000 meters and world champion in the event in 2003, will also race in Karlsruhe, "either in the 1500 or 3000," according to a press release. A strong field in the 1000 meters is also being assembled, led by Daniel Kipchirchir Komen and French record holder Mehdi Baala. Karlsruhe has been host to several fast performances in the middle and long distance events. Five of the six fastest indoor 3000 meter performances have come in this German meet, all by Haile Gebrselassie. Comment on this story. |
