Athletics: High Mark Set for Successful Second Year OC Marathon

Newport Beach, CA – (January, 8th, 2006) In its second year, the OC Marathon presented by PacifiCare of California (NYSE: PHS) has raised close to $500,000 in combined fundraising efforts for eleven Orange County Children’s Charities. Approximately 11,000 runners from (14) countries, (41) states and over (600) cities accompanied some 40,000 spectators last weekend to set a high mark for one of the most successful international marathons in the world with many dramatic story lines. "We are proud to be back for a second year," said presenting sponsor PacifiCare Chief Executive Officer, James Frey. He adds, "It's a great event to be associated with."

Kenyans Dominate Men’s Field

The elite male athletes sprinted to the finish line to round out the prestigious competitive field with Albert Kiplagat, 34 (Bib #4) leading the pack of five Kenyan runners to take first place in the OC Marathon with a winning time of 2:24:22. Second place went to Shadrack Muge, (Bib #15) with a time of 2:24:24 and Joseph Mutinda, 31 placed third with a time of 2:24:44. The top Orange County runner behind the Kenyan leaders was Michael Conners, 38 (Bib #171) from San Clemente, who placed ninth with a time of 2:45:49.

Women’s Field Lead By Magdalena Boulet

Close to 50 % of the runners in the second annual OC Marathon were female with Magdalena Boulet, 32 (Bib #12) from Oakland, California leading the women’s race with a winning time of 2:50:41. Second place went to Mary Akor, 29 with a time of 2:53:57 and third place went to Katerina Stetsenko, 23 with a finishing with a time of 2:55:33. Local runner Kathy Kobrine, 39 (Bib #49) of Irvine, California won the women’s half marathon with a time of 1:23:16.

Running Legend Bill Rodgers Inspires Runners Of All Ages

Four-time winner of the New York and Boston Marathons, Bill Rodgers, participated in the half marathon course and enjoyed talking to runners along the way. “No question this was a wonderful course with a lot of natural beauty and variety,” states Rodgers. “In all the years I’ve been running I have never seen so many young people run so well in a road race and actually make it their own.” “That says a lot about the organizers and the charities that the OC Marathon supports,” he adds.

OC Marathon Encourages Kids to Help Kids

The OC Marathon and Run For Orange County Kids (ROCK) cares about our community, the children in the community and their future health. With close to 4,000 participants under the age of eighteen participating in this years event, the OC Marathon encouraged kids to help kids through exercise and fundraising. The youngest runners to complete the 1.2 mile OC Marathon Kid’s Run were five years old with the oldest marathon runner being Sid Jones, 82 (Bib#16718) from Laguna Hills who finished the marathon with a time of 6:59:21. Emelio Melilli, 85 (Bib# 9541) from Palm Springs was the oldest half marathon finisher with a time of 3:14:25.

The Main Reason We're Running Is For The Children

This year's second annual OC Marathon established a unique relationship between runners, volunteers and race spectators with eleven Orange County Children's Charities. In fact, the OC Marathon generated close to $500,000 in combined fundraising efforts for the local children's charities listed below. To reach this goal, we inspired each runner, event team, volunteer and spectator with a special motivation that goes far beyond simply the love of competition, exercise, fun or community service. To that end, we encourage everyone to plan on participating next year in our extraordinary event to "Adopt-A-Children's-Charity”.
