Athletics: IAAF President Invited To Davos For Special Session On Sport

MONACO - IAAF President Lamine Diack will join United Nations’ Secretary General Koffi Annan as well as leaders from World Sport, industry and politics for a Special Session on Sport at the 36th World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, which opens today.

For the first time ever, and in recognition of the enormous contribution of sport to society at large, the Davos organisers have invited leading personalities from sports to discuss a number of key topics with other leaders from the political and economic communities. With the global sports market, including sporting equipment and clothing, set to top US$ 200 billion in the next three years, according to recent analysis, sport is a significant global business as well as a powerful social force.

Amongst the topics likely to be discussed are the opportunities for collaboration to strengthen the position and impact of sports on a global level, the influence of sports leaders in improving the state of the world, and future initiatives by sport to help achieve this goal.

Amongst the other sport leaders attending the Davos meetings are IOC President Jacques Rogge, FIFA President Joseph Blatter, the legendary soccer player Pele, the head of WADA Dick Pound and Larry Scott, Chairman of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA).

The Special session on Sport begins with a Media Lunch for about 200 journalists titled: “The Impact of Sport in the World” then continues with a discussion on “Sports and the Global Agenda in the Next Decade”, while topics on the agenda tomorrow include a Public Session entitled “Can a Ball Change the World? The Role of Sports in Development” and “Fever Pitch: Sports and Branding in Emerging Markets”.

The World Economic Forum is an independent international organisation committed to improving the state of the world by engaging leaders in partnerships to shape global, regional and industry agendas.
