Posted: January 27, 2006 Athletics: Carlsbad 5000 and Rock 'n' Roll Marathon Coming Soon SAN DIEGO, Calif. (Jan. 27, 2006) -- Whether you want to run three miles or 26 miles, now is the time to register for two favorites on the Southern California fitness calendar; the Carlsbad 5000 and the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon. Participants who sign up for either race by Jan. 31 can save on entry fees. Registration for the Carlsbad 5000, set for April 9, is currently just $21 online while the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon, on June 4, is $70 thru the end of this month. The world-renowned Carlsbad 5000 celebrates its 21st birthday in grand fashion this year and over the years the 3.1-mile scenic seaside course has become a Southern California favorite among families and fitness buffs. A flat, fast course - 15 world records have been set there - offers competition for all ages and levels. Six different age group races for the masses precede the elite competition, offering all participants and spectators the opportunity to view the world-class invitational runners. The popular Junior Carlsbad kids' event, for children ages 12 and under, is held the day prior, April 8. This year marks the ninth running of the original Rock 'n' Roll Marathon. Held the first Sunday in June, the 26.2-mile event is open to runners and walkers of all levels from novice to elite. More than 40 live bands line the scenic course that passes a number of San Diego highlights. From the start line in Balboa Park to the finish line at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, participants are treated to everything from rock and reggae to blues and hip-hop. Adding to the excitement are more than 2,000 local high school cheerleaders competing in the Spirit on the Course" competition. The day is capped off with a post-race concert at Coors Amphitheatre highlighting a major rock 'n' roll headliner. The Rock 'n' Roll Marathon is limited to 20,000 entries, including a significant percentage reserved for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team In Training participants, so participants are encouraged to sign up early. For more information or to register for the 2006 Carlsbad 5000, Junior Carlsbad or the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon, visit www.eliteracing.com and www.rnrmarathon.com or call 800/311-1255. Mail-in registration for the Carlsbad 5000 is $26 through January 31. Participants can save by registering online, for $21, also through January 31. The entry fee is then $23 through April 2 when online registration closes, and $30 race weekend. Rock 'n' Roll Marathon registration is $70 thru January 31 and $85 thereafter.
