Posted: January 30, 2006 Athletics: Kids Marathon Race Highlights Succesful ING Miami Marathon 1,300 Children, 50 Athletes With Disabilities Stand Out Among Record Field Of 10,000 Runners MIAMI (January 29, 2006) – The 4th ING Miami Marathon was host to one of the country’s largest kids races, the ING Run For Something Better, and one of the country’s largest fields of Athletes With Disabilities. Among 10,000 runners, were 1,300 children completing the Final mile of a 26.2 mile marathon challenge and 50 Athletes with Disabilities, including recently disabled veterans from Walter Reed Medical Center. In the men’s division, Ruben Garcia, 2:18:15 35, of Mexico, beat out defending champion Elias Bastos of Brazil, 2:19:43. The Latin American sweep was rounded out by Brazilian Jose Guttembergue Ferreira, 2:19:50. Hiromi Ominami, 30, of Japan, set a new course record over former record holder Sandra Ruales Mosquera, 31, of Ecuador. Ominami finished in 2:34:11 while Mosquera took second 2:37:18. Finishing in third place, Wioletta Kryza, 37, of Poland, crossed the line 2:39:10. The ING Run for Something Better program, one of the 20th largest kid’s races, was a challenge to all Miami Dade County Public School children developed to promote physical education in South Florida. Congressman Kendrick Meek came out to run the 1.2 mile race that finished on the official ING Miami Marathon finish line. Comment on this story. |
