Athletics: Barber named USATF Athlete of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS - Me'Lisa Barber has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week after winning the Visa Women's 60 meters at the Reebok Boston Indoor Games.

The 2005 USA outdoor 100m champion, Barber ran a personal best and set a meet record of 7.09 seconds, beating out Lauryn Williams and Angela Daigle-Bowen. Barber's time was just .01 seconds off the world leading time of 7.08.

Other notable performers over the weekend include reigning World Indoor silver medalist Reese Hoffa, who won a close men's shot put with a world leading throw of 21.07m/61-9.5 at the Reebok Boston Indoor Games. Also at that meet was Terrence Tremmell, 2002 USA indoor champion and two-time Olympic hurdles silver medalist, who won the MBTA men's 60 meters in a world-leading 6.57 seconds. Francena McCorory, a Bethel High School senior who will run for Hampton University next year, shattered the girl's high school 300-meter indoor national record by running 36.96 seconds in winning at the Virginia Tech Invitational track and field meet. McCorory broke the previous record of 37.59, set in 2002 by Shana Cox of New York.

Now in its sixth year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.

2006 USATF Athlete of the Week Winners: January 3, Walt Henning; January 10, Amandi Rhett; January 17, Kevin Eastler; January 24, Marisa Hanson; January 31, Me'Lisa Barber.
