Athletics: Hoffa named USATF Athlete of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS - Reese Hoffa has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week after winning the Visa Men's shot put Friday night at the Millrose Games in New York City.

The Visa Championship Series leader and 2005 USA Outdoor shot put silver medalist, Hoffa threw a 2006 world leading 21.65 meters/71 feet, 5 inches, also a Madison Square Garden record. Hoffa's performance earned him the Fred Schmertz Trophy as the top performer of the meet.

Another notable performance over the weekend was Jeff Hartwig's fifth Millrose title in the Fred Schmertz men's pole vault, clearing 5.73m/18-9.75. At age 38, Hartwig's win relegated #1 world-ranked Brad Walker to second (5.68m/18-7.75) with Olympic silver medalist Toby Stevenson in third with 5.60m/18-4.5.

Now in its sixth year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.

2006 USATF Athlete of the Week Winners: January 3, Walt Henning; January 10, Amandi Rhett; January 17, Kevin Eastler; January 24, Marisa Hanson; January 31, Me'Lisa Barber; February 7, Reese Hoffa.
