Posted: February 10, 2006 Athletics: Banska Bistrica Next Stop For Bergqvist By Bob Ramsak
After notching her fourth straight win of the season last night, recently-mined world indoor record holder Kajsa Bergqvist will be the headline act at the 13th Europa SC High Jump meeting in Banksa Bystrica, Slovakia, on Tuesday, February 14. Last Saturday, the 29-year-old Swede cleared 2.08 [6-9 3/4] in Arnstadt, Germany, eclipsing the previous world record of 2.07 [6-9 1/2] set by Germany's Heike Henkel nearly 14 years earlier. At a meet in Goteborg, Sweden, last night, Bergqvist, the reigning world champion, collected her fourth win in as many competitions this winter, clearing 2.00 meters. In her season opener, Bergqvist won an international match in Glasgow, Scotland, late last month with a 2.01 effort. Bergvist, also the reigning European champion, missed the 2004 Olympic Games when she tore her Achilles tendon just a month before the Athens Games, but came back strongly last year, winning each of her 13 competitions. In Banska Bistrica, Bergqvist will face fellow Swede Emma Green, the bronze medallist from last year's World Championships, along with a trio of top Czech jumpers --Barbora Lalakova, Iva Strakova and Romana Dubnova. Iryna Kovalenko, Ukraine's 2004 world junior champion, is also on the start list. Headlining the men's field is Yuri Krimarenko from Ukraine, the surprise winner at the World Championships last August, along with compatriot Andrey Sokolovskiy, whose 2.38 [7-9 3/4] leap equalled the highest in the world in 2005. Olympic champion Stefan Holm, who was sidelined by illness from last night's competition in Goteborg, is also scheduled to compete. The meeting records --2.36 [7-8 3/4] by Romanian Sorin Matei and 2.00 [6-6 3/4] by Tatiana Motkova of Russia-- have stood since 1995. Copyright © Bob Ramsak and Track Profile.
