Reigning U.S. 1500m champion, Alan Webb of Reston, Va., has been forced to withdraw from this weekend's U.S. Cross Country Championships in New York City because of illness.

"I was a wreck," said Webb in a prepared statement referring to the case of bronchitis he battled after returning home from Spain last month where he had run two cross country races. He lost eight pounds during the illness. "I couldn't run, and this was a pretty easy decision. It's a big bummer."

Webb had planned to run the 12-K event on Sunday.

"It is always heartbreaking for an athlete when he doesn't get a chance to step to the starting line after he has put in so much work," said New York Road Runners president and CEO Mary Wittenberg. The Road Runners are hosting the event at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx.

Athens Olympics teammates Abdi Abdirahman and Dathan Ritzenhein appear to be the favorites for the 12-K title, the last race on the two-day program.
