Athletics: Spearmon named Athlete of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS - Wallace Spearmon has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week after winning the men's 300m and 4x400m relay in record times over the weekend at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

The 2005 World silver medalist in the 200m, Spearmon ran a world best 31.88-second 300 meters and split 45.94 seconds for his 400 meter leg of the world record setting relay. His performance in the 300 meters gave Spearmon a bonus of $25,000, put up by Tyson for anyone who posted a world best mark at the meet.

Other notable performers over the weekend were Spearmon's teammates in the 4x400 meter relay. With an overall world record time of 3:01.96, Kerron Clement, Darold Williamson, and Jeremy Wariner all had stellar splits running 46.1, 45.18, and 44.74 seconds respectively. The quartet split a world record bonus of $25,000.

Now in its sixth year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
