Posted: February 27, 2006 Athletics: Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Recruiting Runners For Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon, Half Marathon & 10K Events Runners Receive Free Entry To 29th Annual Race Plus Tailored Training Program CLEVELAND (Feb. 27, 2006) – The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation has teamed up with the Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon to recruit runners for the marathon, half marathon and 10K events on Sunday, May 21 in downtown Cleveland. The 29th annual race weekend is one of the longest standing running traditions in the Midwest. It is one of the 50 oldest marathons in the U.S. Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s Team for Life program is offering runners an opportunity to contribute to a worthy cause while at the same time participating in an event that can be a challenging, rewarding experience. Runners are asked to raise a minimum of $850 in pledges or donations. In return, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation will waive the entry fee into the race of the runner’s choice and match each runner with a knowledgeable coach and a tailored training regimen in preparation for the May 21 events. Runners will also be able to participate in group training programs. “The money that runners raise on behalf of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is needed for ongoing research into this disease that affects some 30,000 children and adults in the U.S. and more than 10 million others who are knowing, symptomless carriers of the defective CF gene,” said Sharon Somerville-McGuire, executive director of the Rainbow Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in Cleveland. “We are also proud of the fact that 90 cents of every dollar raised to fight Cystic Fibrosis goes directly toward research.” The defective CF gene causes the body to produce abnormally thick mucus that clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatening lung infections. About 1,000 new cases of CF are diagnosed each year. “This is a disease that shortens life expectancy to the mid-30’s and we’re proud to be able to help the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation recruit runners for the Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon and join the fight for continuing research,” said Ralph Staph, race director of the Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon & 10K. Walking divisions for the marathon and half marathon, which were introduced last year, are now joined in 2006 by a 10K walking division.
