Athletics: Canadian track and field athletes gearing up for Commonwealth Games

OTTAWA – Athletics Canada’s Commonwealth Games national team is heating up in Australia in preparation of the XVIII Commonwealth Games which begin on March 15th. A number of athletes competed today in the Telstra A-Series IAAF World Athletics Tour at Olympic Park in Melbourne.

Notable Canadian performances

* Carmen Douma-Hussar’s time of 4:10.65 was the fastest in the women’s 1500 metres, edging out Courtney Babcock who was third in a time of 4:11.00.

* Diane Cummins finished in second in the 800 metres with a time of 2:01.95.

* Angela Whyte was the second fastest women in the 100 metre hurdles in a time of 13.40.

*Jennifer Joyce earned second place with a distance of 66.06 metres in the women’s hammer throw.

* Gary Reed was second fastest in the men’s 800 metres (1:47.25).

*Scott Russell was second in the men’s javelin with a throw of 73.48 metres.

* Kevin Sullivan finished second in the mile run with a time of 4:01.18, barely ahead of Nate Brannen who was third in 4:01.81.

* Stephanie McCann had the third highest jump in women’s pole vault at a height of 4.20 metres.

* Chantal Petitclerc finished in third place in a race that also featured men, finishing first among the women in a time of 55.48.

The XVIII Commonwealth Games begin on March 15th in Melbourne Australia with athletics kicking off on March 19th.
