Multisport: TriFREAK Indoor Triathlon Championship Results are In

The championship race, the third in a series of three indoor triathlons held at the Korum YMCA in Puyallup, made its inaugural debut with the 2006 race.

The race consisted of a 20-minute pool swim, a 20-minute trainer ride, and a 20-minute run on a 1/6 of a mile indoor track. The competitors distances were then added together to form their overall distance for the event.

Among the competitors were some young triathletes making their mark on the indoor scene. The youngest competitor, 13-year-old Ryan Bradway, was the star of the swim portion, winning the swim portion in a two-way tie with Karen Oyama for .82 in 20 minutes. Karen also won the women’s race overall. What a spectacular race for young Ryan, who finished the day with a final distance of 7.41.

Also on the female youth scene, 16-year-old Claire Groo won her age group and took 7th overall for the women with a final distance of 7.46.

Clearly the surprise of the day was overall male winner 18-year-old Andy Edick, who finished with a staggering 10.93, crushing the rest of the field by over a mile. The women’s winner, Karen Oyama, also dominated the women’s field by finishing 1.06 ahead of her closest competitor.

Top masters honors went to Julie Groo, who also finished third overall for the females and David Brent, who was also the oldest competitor of the race.

The Korum YMCA is also host of the upcoming Start Global Cooling Triathlon to be held April 8, just a few weeks away. The SGC triathlon will consist of a 400-yard pool swim, a 9-mile bike and a 2-mile run.
