Athletics: Valien named USATF Athlete of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS - Johnnye Valien has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week after winning six events in the W80 age division over the weekend at the 2006 USA Masters Indoor Championships in Boston.

A 2006 World Indoor Masters champion, Valien claimed the gold in the pole vault with a winning height of 1.35 meters/4 feet, 5 inches, the 60m dash in 12.96 seconds, the long jump with a leap of 2.45m/8-0.5, the high jump with a clearance of .94m/3-1 and the shot put with a heave of 5.67m/18-7.25. Valien ended her weekend with a world record bound of 5.57m/18-3.25 inches in the triple jump.

Now in its sixth year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
