Posted: March 29, 2006 Athletics: Canadian Masters Legend Ian Hume passes at 91 Ian Hume died yesterday at age 91. Ian was a prominent masters athlete until a few years ago. Prior to that he was a Canadian open champion at high jump and possibly other events. Also he was an official with the FAQ and Athletics Canada and contributed to International technical committees, the Montreal Olympics etc, a great guy and a significant contributor to the sport. The funeral is on Friday in St Lambert not too far from the scene of his exploits on the track there when it was one of the main running venues in the Montreal area. Ian was born in Foster, Quebec in 1914. He graduated from Bishop’s University with a Bachelor of Arts degree at age 19. From the day in 1929 when Ian won his first gold medal in athletics at the age of 15, he was launched on a glorious sporting career that was to span 8 decades. With the introduction of the World Association of Veteran Athletes inaugural World Championships track and field meet in Toronto in 1975, Ian returned to competitive athletics. Over the course of the next 25 years, he proceeded to set more than 40 world masters age group records in 9 different events - high jump, long jump, triple jump, pole vault, hurdles, javelin, weight throw, pentathlon and decathlon (see following summary for list of performances). Having competed in 7 World Championships, he has won 10 gold, 12 silver and 6 bronze medals. Although Ian retired from active competition in 1999, he continued to hold more than 35 Canadian outdoor and indoor records at the masters level .
