Athletics: Hardee named Athlete of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS - Trey Hardee has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week after setting a new men's NCAA decathlon record Thursday at the 2006 79th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays.

The 2005 NCAA decathlon champion, Hardee won the decathlon with a collegiate record 8,465 points. The Texas senior beat the collegiate mark of 8,463 set by Tom Pappas of Tennessee in 1999. Hardee's win moves him into eighth place on the U.S. all-time list, just behind 1976 Olympic champion Bruce Jenner.

Now in its sixth year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
