Posted: April 131, 2006 Athletics: Slovenian International Series To Launch May 6 By Bob Ramsak
LJUBLJANA, Slovenia -- A nine-meet series, dubbed the International Athletics League, will be launched on May 6, the Slovenian Athletics Federation (AZS) announced. The season-long series, which will crown overall champions, will begin in Nova Gorica, a city straddling the border with Italy, and conclude in Celje on September 13. “This is an idea we’ve discussed for a long time,” said AZS President Peter Kukovica. “We’re hoping to attract athletes from other countries as well, which will provide better quality competition for our athletes at home.” The inaugural series will provide a total prize jackpot of 6 million SIT – approximately 25,000 euros - to be distributed among the top-10 male and female athletes at the conclusion of the series. The awards will be performance-based, with each athlete’s top three performances from the series, based upon the Hungarian scoring tables, tallied. Other meetings in the series will be held in Slovenska Bistrica (14 May), Kranj (27 May), Ljubljana (3 June), Velenje (23 June), Novo Mesto (12 July), Maribor (19 July), and Brezice (6 September). Boris Mikuz, AZS General Secretary, added, “Many of our athletes have few competitive international opportunities, so this series, from May through September, will provide season-long quality competitions.” For additional information, interested athletes and managers should contact the AZS via its website at www.atletska-zveza.si |
