Posted: April 19, 2006 Triathlon: Canadian Ironman Champion raising money for MADD Canada The Canadian Ironman Champion will be competing in this year's World Ironman Championship in Hawaii, US -- and he is raising money to support MADD Canada. OAKVILLE, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - April 19, 2006) - Tom Lettner, Canadian Ironman Champion, will be competing in this year's World Ironman Championship in Hawaii, US -- and he is raising money to support MADD Canada. The Canadian champion's goal is to raise $15,000 in donations for MADD Canada by the time he competes in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii on October 21, 2006. The public who wishes to support Tom Lettner and MADD Canada can donate by visiting www.madd.ca. "We admire Tom's athletic feats," says Karen Dunham, MADD Canada's National President. "We are very appreciative of his fundraising efforts to support our programs and services. You can be certain we'll be cheering our champion on in Hawaii."
Tom Lettner has won the Ironman Canada in 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2005. He has over 200 races in his career, over 100 plaques for placing in the top 3. This is remarkable given he only started running at age 40 and running triathlons at age 45. Since turning 60, Tom has completed 4 Ironmans. At age 65, last year, he won his age group at the Madison, Wisconsin Ironman, which has allowed Tom to compete at the 2006 World Ironman Championships. "I want to do whatever I can to support MADD Canada when I see how lives have been cut short as a result of impaired driving," says Tom Lettner. "I hope my fundraising effort will be another way Canadians become more aware and will help to stop drinking and driving. We must all do our part in eliminating impaired driving and stopping the needless deaths and injuries on our roads." Mr. Lettner is a Mississauga resident, former Royal Bank of Canada employee and now part-time employee for the Running Room. For more on MADD Cada visit: www.madd.ca. |
