Athletics: A Record 50,746 Sign Up for The 2006 Vancouver Sun Run
Vancouver (April 23, 2006) — Sun Runners by the thousands took to the streets of Vancouver this morning celebrating what was the record breaking 22nd Vancouver Sun Run. And quite a celebration it was with 50,746 participants entered into Canada’s biggest fun run. This smashes the 2003 record of 49,743 registrants.
In the Women’s Overall Division, Isabella Ochichi from Kenya set a new course record with her first place time of 30:55 beating Tatyana Hladyr of the Ukraine who finished second with a time of 32:11 and 2003 Sun Run Women’s Champion Aster Demissie of Ethiopia placed third with her time of 33:02.
Gilbert Okari of Kenya won first place in the Men’s Overall Division with his time of 28:25. Finishing in second place was Meshack Sang of Kenya with his time of 29:23 and running third was Joel Bourgeois from Grand Digue, New Brunswick at 29:46, who also took Top Male Canadian honors.
The Vancouver Sun Run, presented by HSBC Bank Canada, is Canada’s largest 10 km run and North America’s second largest with a prize purse of $21,000 allocated as follows:
Top three Overall Male and Female - $3,000, $1,000 and $500.
Top five Canadian Male and Female - $2,000, $1,000, $750, $500, and $250. Top three
Male and Female Overall Masters win $750, $500 and $250.
