Posted: April 26, 2006 Athletics: Felix-Barber Duel Set For Ostrava By Bob Ramsak
Allyson Felix, the surprise early season world leader in the 100 meters, will take on reigning U.S. champion Me'Lisa Barber at the Golden Spike Grand Prix in Ostrava, Czech Republic, on May 30, organizers announced today. Felix, the world champion in the 200 and the Olympic silver medallist in the longer dash, made her 2006 outdoor debut a notable one last weekend at the Kansas Relays, where she defeated a solid field in the 100 meters with a personal best 11.04. Barber, whose 7.01 victory at the World Indoor Championships last month catapulted the 25-year-old into the event's No. 7 spot all-time, has yet to race since her victory in Moscow. "I heard that the track in Ostrava is fast so I am looking forward to improving my time," Felix said in a press release. Felix has an upcoming 100 meter appearance at this weekend's Drake Relays, and is also on the slate for the adidas Track Classic in Carson, Calif., on May 21. Both the 100 and 200 are on the schedule at the Carson competition, but it was not immediately reported which event Felix would contest there. The pair met four times over the distance in 2005, with Barber emerging with a 4-1 edge. [NOTE: TPR will provide on-site coverage from Ostrava.]
