Athletics: Kastor named USATF Athlete of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS - Deena Kastor has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week after winning the London Marathon in a new American Record time on Sunday.

The 2004 Olympic bronze medalist, Kastor defeated a strong international field in London in 2 hours 19 minutes 35 seconds, making her the fourth fastest woman of all-time and the eighth ever to run under 2:20. She became the first American woman to run a marathon under 2 hours, 20 minutes, besting her previous record of 2:21:16.

Another notable performance was turned in by three-time USA Outdoor champion Kim Kreiner, who set a new American women's javelin throw record with a heave of 60.88 meters/199 feet, 9 inches Saturday afternoon at the Woody Wilson Classic in Davis, California. Kreiner's winning throw bettered her previous record of 60.86m/199-8 set in winning the gold medal at the 2003 Pan American Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Now in its sixth year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
