Posted: May 1, 2006 Athletics: Carmen Douma-Hussar To Run Cambridge Classic Mile CAMBRIDGE, ONTARIO ---- May 1st, 2006--- Cambridge's own middle distance running star Carmen Douma-Hussar has confirmed she will compete in the 2006 Cambridge Classic Mile marking her first appearance in her hometown event. The mile will be held on the crushed brick track at Galt Collegiate Institute, Ontario's oldest school, on Saturday, June 10th. Douma-Hussar stepped into the ranks of world class middle distance running with a silver medal winning performance over 1,500m at the 2004 IAAF World Indoor Championships in Budapest, Hungary. She followed that up with credible 9th place finishes at both the 2004 Olympics and at the 2005 IAAF World Outdoor Championships. In addition she has made the podium in numerous European grand prix meets. A graduate of Breslau's Woodland Christian School, Douma-Hussar excelled at Villanova University where she won three NCAA titles for the Wildcats. Coached by three time world indoor 1,500m champion Marcus O'Sullivan of Ireland, Douma-Hussar works as an assistant coach at her alma mater. Douma-Hussar, 29, joins Kenyans Laban Rotich and Boiz Cheboiywo as well as another Cambridge miler, Nathan Brannen in the Cambridge Classic Mile. Race director, John Carson, has announced that the keys to a Mercedes-Benz sedan will be handed over to either the winner of the men's or women's elite race provided they beat the established time standards of 3:59.9 for men and 4:29.9 for women. If both winners meet the time standards June 10th whomever beats the time by the widest margin will claim the car. Last year Rotich stopped the clock in a time of 3:58.9 to win a car. Carson and his colleagues at Cambridge Mile Productions are pleased that Brooks Shoes Canada and Manulife Financial will share title sponsorship of the event. Associate sponsors include Run For Life, Langdon Hall and Mercedes-Benz. Media Partners for the 3rd Cambridge Classic Mile include the Globe and Mail and The Record newspapers. As the event continues to grow Carson has also announced that a corporate mile relay will be held in conjunction with the event. The race website is at: CambridgeClassicmile.com.
