Posted: May 5, 2006 Athletics: IAAF World Athletics Day to be celebrated in Abbotsford, BC and Sackville, NS OTTAWA – Athletics Canada is thrilled to announce that 2006 World Athletics Day, the IAAF’s (International Association of Athletics Federations) annual worldwide festival of youth, will be celebrated in Abbotsford, BC and Lower Sackville, NS. The annual worldwide festival is one of the busiest weekends on the athletics calendar, with 156 IAAF Member Federations taking part in World Athletics Day 2006. On May 6th World Athletics Day will be celebrated as part of the Valley Royals High School Invitational in Abbotsford, BC. Athletes aged 14-17 will participate in various events including the 100m dash, 800m sprint, long jump, and high jump. Participants will receive t-shirts, certificates, pins and posters commemorating World Athletics Day 2006. The second Canadian 2006 IAAF World Athletics Day host will be Metropolitan Field in Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia. The event will feature over 500 young athletes as well as some of Nova Scotia’s finest track and field stars including 400m runner Jenna Martin, 100m sprinter Adrienne Power, and 800m specialist Heather Hennigar. IAAF World Athletics Day Diplomas will be presented to participants in both Abbotsford and Lower Sackville, helping encourage enthusiasm for athletics. World Athletics Day was inaugurated by the IAAF in 1996. Athletics Canada is the national sport governing body for the sport of track and field including cross-country running, road running and road racing.
