Justin Gatlin set a world record in the 100 meters this evening, running 9.76 at the Doha Super Grand Prix in Qatar.

The 24-year-old American, the reigning world and Olympic champion in the event, broke the previous record of 9.77 set last year by Jamaican Asafa Powell. It was also Gatlin's first sub-9.80 performance. His previous personal best of 9.85 was set in the Olympic final in Athens in 2004, and equalled tonight in the first of two heats.

Olusoji Fasuba of Nigeria was second, clocking 9.84, a massive improvement for the 21-year-old. Entering the meet, Fasuba, the silver medallist at the Commonwealth Games in March, had a personal best of 10.09 from 2004. In the evening's second heat, Fasuba improved to 9.92.
