Athletics: Team USA to compete at 2006 IAAF World Race Walking Cup

INDIANAPOLIS - America's finest race walkers are set to compete at the 22nd IAAF World Race Walking Cup May 13-14 in LaCoruna, Spain.

Athletes from 63 countries will toe the line at the event which features elite competition over 20 km (men and women) and 50 km (men only). There will also be a 10 km competition for junior men and women.

Team USA will be led by two-time Olympian and five-time U.S. Outdoor champion Tim Seaman. Joining Seaman in the men's 20 km race are 2004 Olympian and 2005 U.S. 20 km runner-up John Nunn and American-Record holder in the 30 km race walk, Kevin Eastler. Eastler won the men's 20 km race at the Team Time Trials in Happauge, N.Y. in a new course record time of 1 hour, 25 minutes, 15 seconds.

Also look for two-time Olympian and 2005 U.S. runner-up Philip Dunn to compete in the men's 50 km race. Fourteen-time U.S. champion Ray Sharp will also be competing.

The women of Team USA will be led by American record holder and reigning U.S. 20 km champion Theresa Vaill and 2006 U.S. Indoor 5 km champion Joanne Dow. Dow also set a new course record in winning the women's 20 km race at the Team Time Trials in 1:34:47 with Vaill the runner-up in 1:35:41.

In the junior 10 km race, look for Katy Hayes, who posted a qualifying time for the 2006 World Junior Championships in Beijing, China, as the first American woman across the finish line in 50:32 at the Team Time Trials. On the junior men's side, Mike Kazmierczak earned a spot on the team after finishing second overall (top placing American) in the men's race in 48:52.
