Triathlon: Canadians Continue to Climb the Latest ITU Rankings

It has been a great week for Canadian triathletes, not only did the Canadians post four top-10 results in the latest World Cup last Sunday in Mazatlan, but now 7 Canadian male and female athletes have made significant jumps in the latest ITU Rankings.

Lauren Groves who has been on fire in the early part of the season with a fifth and sixth in the last 2 World Cup races leads the way at #8, Lauren’s previous ITU Ranking was 13th. Groves’s tremendous start has her ranked ahead of Commonwealth Games champion, Emma Snowsill from Australia. Lauren is also ranked in the top-10 in the latest World Cup Rankings – Groves was 18th however, her sixth in Mazatlan propelled her to #9.

Samantha McGlone, who has not raced yet in 2006, is 31st on the latest ITU Rankings.

Kathy Tremblay’s first ever podium performance at the Mazatlan World Cup pushed her ranking up 60 places – going from #103 to #43.

Carolyn Murray is the next highest ranked Canadian at #49 – Carolyn improved her ranking by 13 positions with her 12th place finish in Mazatlan.

Jill Savege also saw her ranking climb significantly with a top-10 in Mazatlan. Jill is now ranked 51st up 19 places from her previous ranking.

On the Men’s side Simon Whitfield is back in the top-30 with his 9th place finish in Mazatlan - this was Simon’s first race of the season. In the previous ITU Rankings Whitfield was 46th.

Paul Tichelaar has been very active in the early part of the season and in the most recent rankings published today, Paul is ranked 59th up 15 spots.

And finally Kyle Jones had the biggest climb of all – with a career race in Mazatlan, a 14th place finish, the young Canadian improved by 82 spots and is now ranked 99th – the first time he has ever been ranked in the top-100.

Triathlon Canada is the National Federation for the Sport of Triathlon and Duathlon in Canada.
