Posted: May 23, 2006 Multisport: Team USA Heads To Long Course Duathlon Worlds COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – A group of 42 athletes are on their way to Fredericia, Denmark to represent the U.S. at the International Triathlon Union (ITU) Long Course Duathlon World Championships on Sunday, May 28. The team, sponsored by USA Triathlon, consists of 35 age group athletes and seven elites, who will compete in the 15k run, 90k bike, and 7.5k run event. “The size of this team should promote team spirit. It should be very supportive,” said Team USA/Duathlon Coordinator Troy Stiles, who is also expecting great support from the city of Fredericia. “The city really gets behind it. The streets are packed and members of the royal family take part in the awards ceremony. It’s an exciting atmosphere for the athletes.” Highlighting the age group team are two returning world champions from 2005: Kristin Villipoto (Chapel Hill, N.C.), who will compete in the women’s 45-49 division, and Ann Mitchell (Bala Cynwyd, Pa.), who will compete in the women’s 50-54 division. For the men Richard Bailey (McMinnville, Minn.), a 35-39 division competitor, has participated in several world championships, while Phillip Davis (Martin, Tenn.) will compete in the 60-64 division. The elites feature 2006 men’s Short Course National Champion Tom Jeffrey (Richmond, Va.) and Christine Knight (Dacano, Colo.), the 2005 World Champion in the women’s 35-39 age group division.
