Athletics: Salt Lake City Marathon Promotes Race Day Traffic Alternatives

Race Organizers Welcome Fans and Provide Info to Ease June 3 Road Congestion

Salt Lake City, Utah (May 24, 2006) – Organizers of the third annual Salt Lake City Marathon today detailed the streets to be affected by the event and encouraged the use of public transportation to assist traffic flow in the Salt Lake Valley on race day, June 3. Race organizers are expecting more than 15,000 participants combined for the Marathon, Half Marathon, Bike Tour, 5K and Intermountain Kids Marathon. Roads along the 26.2 mile course will have only one-way traffic and in some cases will be fully closed. Residents are encouraged to check the Marathon website at www.saltlakecitymarathon.com for complete course information and to plan ahead for the best routes to their homes and businesses. The course will be open to participants for approximately seven hours, ranging from 6:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Celebration Locations will be held at different spots throughout the course. The public is urged to come out and cheer these courageous athletes in the “spirit” of the race! The Bike Tour starts at 6:00 a.m., while the Marathon and Half Marathon start at 6:45 a.m. at the George S. Eccles Olympic Legacy Bridge. The 5K kicks off at 7:20 a.m. from the east loop in Liberty Park. The Intermountain Kids Marathon will begin at 9:30 a.m. on South Temple and 400 West, and runs through The Gateway via Rio Grande Street. All courses end at the north end of The Gateway.

Course and road closures have been approved by the public safety departments of the participating municipalities of Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, South Salt Lake, Murray and Holladay. The course will be open to participants for approximately seven hours, closing at 1:00 p.m. Bus schedules and TRAX along the marathon course are subject to rerouting. Times will vary throughout the morning. The public is urged to contact UTA Customer Service for their specific transit needs at 888-RIDE-UTA or by visiting www.rideuta.com.

The Salt Lake City Marathon has become one of the most spectacular new marathons in the country. With a prize purse of over $75,000, the race is garnering attention from an increasing number of world-class runners.
