Athletics: Another great weekend for Canadian Track and Field

June 5th 2006, OTTAWA – The record setting Jessica Zelinka from London, Ontario was at it again, this time in Arles, France at the 9th Meeting International d’Arles. Zelinka finished in 1st place, tying the Canadian national record she set last weekend of 6 314 points. Zelinka ran the 100 metre hurdles in 13.10 seconds, finished with 1.72 metres in the high jump, scored 13.36 metres in the shot put, ran the 200 metres in 23.53 seconds, landed the long jump at the 6.23 metre mark, tossed the javelin 43.66 metres and ran the 800 metres in a time of 2:15.23.

The Golden League kicked off in Oslo, Norway this past weekend. Tyler Christopher of Edmonton, AB, Perdita Felicien from Pickering, ON and Nicole Forrester from Cookstown, ON finished in the top eight. Christopher was 6th in the 400 metres with a time of 45.97 seconds and Felicien finished in 8th place in the 100m Hurdles clocking in at 13.07 seconds. Forrester placed 8th in the high jump with a leap of 1.89 metres.

A number of Canadian athletes competed at the Reebok Invitational in New York. Kevin Sullivan from Brantford, ON and Nate Brannen from Cambridge, ON finished 4th and 5th respectively in the mile. Sullivan crossed the finish line in a time of 3:55.89 and Brannen just behind him in a time of 3:56.77. Angela Whyte of Edmonton, AB was 5th in the 100m hurdles in 13.12 seconds, while pole vaulters Dana Ellis from Kitchener, ON and Stephanie McCann of Surrey, BC were 5th and 6th.

Kimberley Hyacinthe from Montréal, QC enjoyed a great performance at the Golden South Classic in Orlando, Florida. Hyacinthe took 1st place in both the 100 and 200 metre races, achieving the standard for the 2006 World Junior Championships in both events and breaking the Quebec Youth Record in the 100m, which she previously set in 2005. Kimberley ran the 100m final in a time of 11.76 seconds and the 200m final in 24.19 seconds. Hyacinthe was named Female Athlete of the Meet.

Athletics Canada is the national sport governing body for the sport of track and field including cross-country running, road running and road racing.
