Triathlon: Registration is Now Open for the 2006 Boston Triathlon

BOSTON, June 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Registration is open for the 6th annual Boston Triathlon (BostonTriathlon.org) on Sunday, September 3, 2006. Presented by KeyPulse.com, the Boston Triathlon welcomes first time triathletes and professionals alike. Nearly 1,000 participants are expected to swim, bike, run as individual competitors or as part of a relay team.

"This is possibly the most unique sporting event in Boston. It includes a world class pro race and an amateur competition comprised of people at all levels of fitness and ability. The urban backdrop of Boston's historic streets and sites, coupled with the two distinct races, is part of what make this triathlon unlike any other," says Dave McGillivray, Boston Triathlon Founder and Co-Race Director, as well as BAA Boston Marathon Race Director.

The Boston Triathlon, supported by Pepsi, City Sports, Clif Bar and Dunkin' Donuts, consists of two distances:

    Sprint:
0.5 mile swim, 11 mile bike, 3.1 mile run
For age groups & relay teams

    Olympic:
0.93 mile swim, 24.8 mile bike, 6.2 mile run
    For Professional Triathletes Only!

Registration is $85 for individuals ($100 after Aug. 27) and $150 for relay teams of 2 or 3. The Boston Triathlon will benefit the SPARK Center at Boston Medical Center, which provides comprehensive support to poor children living with or affected by HIV. There is no minimum requirement, however participants are encouraged to fundraise and prizes will be awarded for the largest amounts raised.

The Boston Triathlon is part of a five-race series of intermediate distance triathlons called "The Haul to the Great Wall." Each race is known for their international elite competition and their popular age group events in interesting locales. They allow triathletes and spectators to get their first look at who might be competing at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China. Each race is sanctioned by USAT and the International Triathlon Union (ITU). The ITU's world rankings system is used to determine which athletes may try to qualify for the Olympic Games.

"The sport of triathlon must be experienced first-hand to truly comprehend how manageable the distances are for just about anyone," says Josh Nemzer, Co-Race Director of the Boston Triathlon. "Our participants are stay at home moms; weekend joggers; recreational cyclists; as well as families and friends who share the effort as a relay team."

Register on-line at BostonTriathlon.org or call 978-258-8226.
