Posted: June 6, 2006 Triathlon: Bastos third, again, at Rock ‘N RollMan Triathlon
MACON, Ga. (June 5, 2006) After a recent bout with food poisoning, Gainesville, Florida-based professional triathlete Felipe Bastos (Breathe-O-Prene), 25, of Brazil, began cautiously Sunday’s USA Triathlon’s Southeast Long Course Regional Championship, the Coliseum’s Rock ‘N RollMan Triathlon (1.8 km S/90 km B/21.1 km R), and eventually raced to a repeat of his 2005 third-place finish, this time in 4:30.07 (29:08/2:31.09/1:27.12). “Normally, I try to lead from the get-go, so this was a bit like a fear of the unknown,” Bastos said of starting the swim easy, still not sure if his stomach was fully right. Exiting in fourth place was not a problem, as he quickly rode to third place, where he held his ground for the next two hours. The killer, he said, was eventual winner Daniel Moss, who flew by Bastos on the bike. “I would have flattened myself if I went with him. I had to play the smarter ticket and conserve energy for the run.” Moss also won the 2005 race. “After an awful start of the season two weeks ago, where I gave in to my gut, I feel good about my finish today, though it wasn’t the result I was looking for,” said Bastos. “I knew I’d race smart, but I just needed to be strong, too.” For more information on Felipe Bastos, visit www.Felipe-Bastos.com. |
