Posted: June 7, 2006 Athletics: News and Notes, Volume 7, Number 43 Gatlin and Powell rescheduled to race in London The co-world record holders for the men's 100 meters, Justin Gatlin and Asafa Powell will go head-to-head in the 100 at the Norwich Union London Grand Prix on July 28. The reigning Olympic and World champion, Gatlin has the world leading time this season with his world record equaling 9.77 seconds. Powell's best this season is his Commonwealth Games winning time of 9.95 seconds. Seaman, Moore win USA 10 km RW Two-time Olympian Tim Seaman won his 29th national title taking the USA Track & Field 10 km Race Walk Championships in 42 minutes 23 seconds on Saturday, June 3 in Niagra Falls State Park. The battle for second and third place in the men's race was tightly contested by two emerging elite competitors Matt Boyles (Xenia, Ohio) pulling away from Michael Tarantino (Rochester, NY) for the runner-up position. Boyles finished in 43:05 and Tarantino crossed the line in 43:56. A former standout distance runner at Michigan State University, Jolene Moore took control of the women's race from the start and was never challenged winning her first USA 10 km Race Walk Championship in 46 minutes 47 seconds. 2005 U.S. Junior Champion Maria Michta was the runner-up in 48:46. Conwright, Harris and Taylor victorious in Prague Three-time Big West Outdoor Conference champion Kaaron Conwright narrowly defeated the competition in winning the 100 meter dash at the 13th Josef Odlozil Memorial meeting in Prague on Monday. Conwright earned the victory when he sprinted to a time of 10.25 seconds, edging out Browne Pierre of Canada who ran a 10.26. 2002 NCAA champion Rickey Harris also came up with a victory in the 400 meter hurdles running a time of 50.24 seconds. Rhys Williams of Great Britain came in second with a time of 50.44. 2004 NCAA Indoor champion Daniel Taylor led the way in the shot put with a throw of 20.98 meters/68 feet 10 inches. His closest competitor, Miran Vodovnik, was more then two feet away with a toss of 20.25/66-5.25. In the women's 100 meter hurdles, 2001 World Indoor and Outdoor champion Anjanette Kirkland ran her way to second place in 13.17 seconds. In the women's 400 meter hurdles, 2005 World and USA Outdoors bronze medalist Sandra Glover placed second in 55.84 seconds. In the men's long jump, Bashir Ramzy took third with a jump of 8.04 meters/26 feet 4.5 inches. Trevell Quinley finished fourth with a jump of 7.92/26-0, and 2006 USA Indoor champion Brian Johnson came in fifth with a leap of 7.88/25-10.25. |
