Posted: June 9, 2006 Athletics: USATF News and Notes, Volume 7, Number 45 NCAA DI Champs Day 2 recap University of Arizona junior Robert Arnold won the men's decathlon on the second day of competition Thursday with a personal best score of 7,870 points at the 2006 NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Sacramento State University in Sacramento, Calif. Arnold started day two of the decathlon in second place with a first day score of 3,973 points. He moved into first place and never relinquished the lead after defending NCAA champions and collegiate record-holder Trey Hardee of Texas recorded a no height in the pole vault. Arnold finished the day with 3,897 points, 98 points ahead of runner-up Chris Helwick, a University of Tennessee junior, who scored 7,772 points to earn his fifth career All-America certificate. Hardee remained in the competition for the javelin and 1,500 meters, and finished in ninth place with 7,263 points. Victoria Jackson of Arizona State set a school record in winning the women's 10,000 meters in 32 minutes 54.72 seconds. The win by Jackson marked her first national title, and it also marked the first distance title for the Sun Devil program on the outdoor track. Arkansas and Wisconsin were tied for the men's team lead with 14 points. Nebraska and Arizona had 10 each. Arizona State is leading the charge for the crown on the women's side with 15 points.
