Athletics: Powell Moves Into Men’s Overall Top-10 In Latest IAAF World Rankings

Monte-Carlo - Jamaica’s Asafa Powell moved into the Top-10 of the Men’s Overall Ranking following his 9.77 (1457 points) World record equalling win in Gateshead on Sunday. Powell’s performance moved him eight points closer to Justin Gatlin in the Men’s 100m Event Ranking, and the Jamaican improved four places to 10th in the Overall Ranking. Also, in the Men’s 100m Event Ranking, Powell’s compatriot, Michael Frater overtook European 60m record holder Ronald Pognon for 8th place, after finishing runner up in Gateshead with 10.06 (1304 points).

Reigning women’s Olympic Long Jump champion Tatyana Lebedeva returned to the Women’s Ranking for that event this week. The 29-year-old is yet to have a competition under 6.79m this season. Lebedeva won in Gateshead with 6.95m (1320 points) and re-entered the Event Ranking in third place, only three points behind her compatriot Oksana Udmurtova. The event is still led by Tatyana Kotova.

2004 World Indoor Shot Put champion Christian Cantwell heaved a massive world leading mark of 22.45m (1408 points) when he won in Gateshead. Cantwell’s mark moved the 25-year-old into second place in the Event Ranking, overtaking his compatriot Reese Hoffa and Denmark’s Joachim Olsen. Cantwell also moved up in the Men’s Overall Ranking to 33rd from his previous position of 60th.

Ezekiel Kemboi replaced Paul Kipsiele Koech in second place in the Men’s 3000m Steeplechase Event Ranking. The reigning Olympic champion won in Lille in 8:14:70 (1294 points) and moved two points ahead of his Kenyan compatriot, while France’s Bouabdallah “Bob” Tahri dropped three places to 7th in the Event Ranking as his win from last year’s Ostrava meet (8:18.12 – 1319 points) is now out of date.
