Posted: June 22, 2006 Athletics: TRACK PROFILE Report Weekly (P)Review - 22-June-2006 By Bob Ramsak
LJUBLJANA, Slovenia - Welcome to the third of TPR's peak-season review/preview reports, a weekly supplement to TPR's news and features service. The primary focus this weekend is on the U.S. championships in Indianapolis --separate preview to follow-- while the European calendar includes a number of national championships and smaller meetings, from which a few open team spots for the SPAR European Cup (June 28-29) in Malaga will be decided. Most of the European action was focused on the European Cup First and Second League matches over the past week, where team points mattered more than performances, although several notable performances in the field events emerged. In Thessaloniki, the Greek men and women swept the titles to move up to the premiere division next year, while in Prague, Belgium's men and the Belarus women were promoted as well, the first time ever for the Belgians. Sunday's Kusocinski Memorial in Warsaw saw some key performances on the field events side of the program, while Tuesday's (June 20) Iberoamericano de Atletismo meet in Huelva, Spain, produced a few notable clockings in the distances. Saturday's Znamensky Memorial in the Moscow suburb of Zhukovsky, the Kuortane Games in Kuortane, Finland, and the annual meet in Nivelles, Belgium are the key competitions in Europe. The Znamenskiy meet will have particular importance for the Russians, as it will decide the remaining spots for the Russian squad for August's European Championships. TPR will be at the 11th MinersFest EAA meet in Velenje, Slovenia, on Friday (June 23). MEN – Sprints -- Olympic 100m silver medallist Francis Obikwelu of Portugal won three races in four days, but none approaced the 10.14 SB from Doha in early May. He took an easy 10.20/20.38 double at the European Cup First League match in Thessaloniki last weekend, and followed up with a 10.19 win an Huelva on Tuesday (June 20). Elsewhere, with just one race under his belt following his return from a doping suspension, Dwain Chambers was given the nod by British selectors for the team slot in the 100 for the European Cup in Malaga next week. Last year, an underachieving UK squad were spared the humiliation of relegation for the first time ever only because the Malaga venue has a nine-lane track. Despite some criticism, Chambers, with his 10.07 from Gateshead making him the fastest European o the year thus far, was the obvious choice.
