Athletics: Eastern Canadian High Performance Athletic Series lands in Ottawa

OTTAWA – The second meet in the Eastern Canadian High Performance Athletic Series will take place this weekend in the nation’s capital at the Terry Fox Athletic Facility (July 2nd and 3rd). The Series which features thirty of the top Canadian athletes as well as a number of foreign competitors is one of the best gatherings of track and field talent to ever assemble in eastern Canada.

The talent level lining up this weekend will be impressive:

· Eric Broomfield will take part in the women’s 100m and 200m dash. Broomfield represented Canada at the 2006 Commonwealth Games where she was a finalist in the 100m.

· Esther Akinsulie from Ottawa will run in the women’s 200m and 400m sprint. Akinsulie is the national champion from 2005 in the 400m.

· Richard Adu-Bobie also from Ottawa will take part in the men’s 200m. Adu-Bobie participated in the 2004 Olympic Games and is a former junior Canadian record holder in the 100m.

· Canadian 10,000m champion Tara Quinn-Smith will line-up in the women’s 1500m.

· 6th place finisher at the 2004 Olympic Games, Charles Allen will participate in the 110m Hurdles.

· Justyn Warner will run in the junior men’s 100m. Warner is the 100m Canadian junior record holder and finished 2nd at the 2005 Pan Am Junior Championships.

The first meet in the Eastern Canadian High Performance Athletic Series took place in London, ON, on June 28th. The third meet in the series is set for July 5th in Ottawa, followed by the fourth event in Sherbrooke, QC, on July 7th, with the series wrapping-up in Halifax, NS, on July 9th.

Notable Results – Meet #1 - London, Ontario, June 28th

· Jessica Zelinka finished in 1st place in the women’s 100m hurdles and was 3rd in the women’s 200m. Zelinka was a 4th place finisher at the 2006 Commonwealth Games breaking the 13-year old Canadian record in the heptathlon. Zelinka has since re-broke the Canadian record on her way to a win at a meet in Arles, France.

· Reid Coolsaet won the men’s 5000m. Coolsaet is the 2005 national champion in the 5000m and participated at both the 2006 Commonwealth Games and 2006 IAAF World Cross Country Championships.

· 2004 Olympian Charles Allen was 3rd in the men’s 110m hurdles.
