Carter, Spearmon win at Luzern

Four-time NCAA champion Xavier Carter scored his first professional victory Thursday winning the men's 100 meters in 10.11 seconds at the EAA Spitzenleichtathletik meeting in Luzern, Switzerland. 2004 Olympic 200m silver medalist Bernard Williams was third in 10.22 and 2005 NJCAA 200m champion Trell Kimmons was fifth in 10.36. For the women, 2002 U.S. long jump champion Brianna Glenn took second in 11.28.

2005 World silver medalist and 2006 U.S. champion Wallace Spearmon won the men's 200 meters in 20.30 seconds while Rodney Martin, who took third at the 2006 U.S. Championships, was fourth in 20.70.

In the men's 5,000 meters, Dathan Ritzenhein, who placed third at the 2006 U.S. Championships, claimed victory in 13 minutes 25.46 seconds. 2005 NCAA champion Ryan Hall took fourth in 13:34.89 Luke Watson was ninth in 13:59.61.

Robby Hughes, the 2001 NAIA champion, stole the show in the men's 110-meter hurdles, edging out David Oliver, 13.36 seconds to 13.38 respectively. On the women's side, 2006 U.S. runner-up Damu Cherry took the win over Jenny Adams in the 100-meter hurdles, clocking in at 12.62 to Adams' 12.76.

2003 JUCO champion Derrick Williams won the men's 400-meter hurdles in 48.94 seconds. Tiffany Ross-Williams, who finished fourth at the 2006 U.S. Championships, won the women's 400-meter hurdles in 55.30 seconds with 2006 NCAA champion Markita James second in 55.66. 2005 NCAA champion Shauna Smith was fourth in 56.79.

The women's 3,000 meters saw 12 Americans competing in a field of 18. After a sprint to the finish, 2006 U.S. 5,000m third-place finisher Blake Russell took second in 8 minutes, 51.67 seconds. London marathon winner and Olympic bronze medalist Deena Kastor was fourth, 2006 USA Outdoor 10,000m champion Amy Rudolph fifth, and 2005 NCAA runner-up Sara Hall sixth in 8:56.35, 8:56.69, and 8:56.93. 2006 USA Outdoor 5,000m champion Lauren Fleshman was seventh in 9:00.89 while 2005 NCAA Indoor champion Renee Metivier was eighth in 9:04.70 and 2004 Olympian Jen Rhines was tenth on 9:09.30. Amy Mortimer was 12th in 9:10.13.

Also in Luzern, 2004 NACAC champion Jeff Chakouian was the runner-up in the men's shot put with a heave of 19.48 meters/63 feet 11 inches. 2004 Olympian Kenta Bell was fifth in the men's triple jump with 16.64m/54-7.25. Kansas State standout Christian Mith was fifth in the men's 1,500m in 3:42.14 while 2005 U.S. 5,000m runner-up Ian Dobson was 11th in 3:45.00. Leonard Byrd took third in the men's 400 meters in 45.74, while Mitch Potter was fourth in 45.76. Three-time Olympian Amy Acuff was the runner-up in the women's high jump with a clearance of 1.86m/6-1.25.

Cantwell wins big, Kreiner sets AR

2004 World Indoor champion Christian Cantwell won the men's shot put with his opening throw of 22.04 meters/ 72 feet 3.75 Thursday at the Aarhus Games in Denmark. Reigning World Indoor champion Reese Hoffa was third with his first round put of 21.04m/69-0.5.

Four-time U.S. champion Kim Kreiner again improved upon her American Record in the women's javelin with her second place heave of 62.44 meters/204 feet 10 inches. This marks the fifth time that Kreiner has broken her record this year, improving upon her previous record of 62.43m set at the U.S. Championships on June 23.

Meeting Gaz de France Paris Saint-Denis Preview

This weekend's IAAF Golden League Meeting Gaz de France Paris Saint-Denis promises stiff competition and is headlined by some of the best athletes in the world including NCAA, USA, World, and Olympic champions.

*2006 World Indoor 60m champion Leonard Scott will take on co-World Record holder Asafa Powell of Jamaica in the men's 100 meters. Also challenging for the win will be 2004 Olympic 200m gold medalist Shawn Crawford, two-time NCAA DII champion Jason Smoots and 2001 World University Games champion Marcus Brunson.

*Reigning World champion Lauryn Williams will face two-time Olympian and five-time U.S. champion Marion Jones in the women's 100 meters. Other contenders vying for the win include 2003 World champion Torri Edwards, 2006 World Indoor 60m champion Lisa Barber, and 2005 NCAA champion Marshevet Hooker.

*Jeremy Wariner, the reigning Olympic and World champion, is back in the men's 400 meters after stepping down in distance to the 200m for much of the season. Looking to challenge Wariner are 2006 U.S. champion Andrew Rock and 2005 World 200m silver medalist Wallace Spearmon.

* 2005 world silver medalist and two-time U.S. champion Sanya Richards is the world's #1 ranked quarter miler. 2004 Olympic 4x400m gold medalist DeeDee Trotter, who finished second to Richards at the U.S. Championships in June,

*Fresh off his history-making 5,000m/1,500m double at the U.S. Championships, Bernard Lagat will run in the men's 1,500 meters.

*Four-time World champion and seven-time U.S. champion Allen Johnson will go up against 2006 U.S. champion and current world-leader Dominique Arnold in the men's 110 meter hurdles. Also look for two-time Olympic silver medalist Terrence Trammell and 2006 NCAA champion Aries Merritt to contend for the win.

*Heading into Paris, Damu Cherry enters the women's 100 meter hurdles with fastest time and will face stiff competition from 2005 World champion Michelle Perry. Lolo Jones, Jenny Adams, and Danielle Carruthers will also compete.

*In the men's 400-meter hurdles, two- time U.S. champion Kerron Clement will go head-to-head with 2005 World silver medalist James Carter.

*Current world-leader and 2006 Outdoor Visa Championships winner Lashinda Demus headlines the women's 400-meter hurdles. 2005 NCAA champion Shauna Smith, veteran Sandra Glover, and Tiffany Ross-Williams are also entered.

*2002 U.S. Indoor champion Mary Sauer will take on two-time Olympian and 2001 World silver medalist Kellie Suttle and 2004 Olympian Jillian Schwartz in the women's pole vault.

*2004 Olympic gold medalist Dwight Phillips will go up against 2005 U.S. champion Miguel Pate and 2006 U.S. champion Brian Johnson. Also look for reigning World Indoor and Outdoor triple jump champion Walter Davis.

*Three-time Olympian Amy Acuff will take on 2005 World silver medalist and 2006 U.S. champion Chaunte Howard in the women's high jump.
