Posted: July 17, 2006 Athletics: USATF News and Notes, Volume 7, Number 51 Three age-group world records set at Masters Decathlon/ Heptathlon Champs Three world records were broken over the weekend including the men's 80-84 decathlon, women's 50-54 decathlon and women's 60-64 decathlon at the USA National Masters Decathlon and Heptathlon Championships at Woolsey Stadium at King's High School in Shoreline, Wash. Dennis Sullivan, of Bend, Ore., shattered the listed M80 world record of 6,802 points, with a total of 7,357 points. The previous record was set by American Fred Hirsimaki in 2005. Rita Hanscom of San Diego, Calif., and Nadine O'Conner of Del Mar, Calif., set new world records in the decathlon in their respective age divisions. No female has ever participated in the decathlon for their age divisions so there winning performances will be recognized as world records. Hanscom scored 7,213 points in the W50 Decathlon. O'Conner scored 8,149 points in the W60 decathlon, breaking the W60 American long jump record in the process. She jumped 4.35 meters/14 feet 3.25 inches to surpass Barbara Cleveland of Florida, who jumped 4.22m/13-10.25 in 2000. Shot put trio and hurdle crew sweep field in Madrid At the 25º Meeting de Atletismo Madrid 2006 in Madrid, Spain, the U.S. made a clean sweep in the men's shot put led by 2005 World indoor champion Christian Cantwell who won the event with a throw of 21.79 meters/71 feet 6 inches. 2006 USA Outdoor runner-up Reese Hoffa followed with a toss of 21.45m/70-4.5, and 2004 NCAA Indoor champion Daniel Taylor placed third with 21.26m/69-9. 2005 World Outdoor bronze medalist Sandra Glove won the women's 400 meter hurdles as the U.S. took the top-three spots. Glover finished in 54.20 seconds, followed by Tiffany Ross-Williams in 54.39 who placed fourth at the 2006 USA Outdoor Championships. 2006 USA Outdoor Championships runner-up Sheena Johnson came in third in 54.52. 2005 World Outdoor champion Allyson Felix was victorious in the women's 200 meters crossing the line in 22.73 seconds while 2005 USA Outdoor Championships 100m runner-up Muna Lee was third in 23.16. 2006 NCAA champion Aries Merritt placed second in the 110 meter hurdles in13.19 seconds as Robles Dayron of Cuba ran away with the victory in 13.08. 2006 USA Outdoor champion Hazel Clark finished second in the 800 meters in 2 minutes 1.78 seconds.
