Sunday 15 October 2006 more athletes than ever will participate in the 31st ING Amsterdam Marathon. First in history the milestone of 7,500 registrations has already been reached in this stage of the pre-registration. This means a growth of 50% in comparison with one year ago. The organization expects the number of participants will finally lead to more than the record of 19,900. This signifies more than twice as much runners in comparison with 2003. ‘A proof our in 2000 formulated target - to organize a running event, which belongs the top events in the world in qualitative (in 2005 the world best time with 2,06,20) and quantitative way (22,500 participants) - is catching on both in interior and abroad,’ according to Joop Waterreus Chairman of the Amsterdam Marathon Foundation.

Economical impulse
More over the Amsterdam Marathon Foundation observes with great satisfaction not less than 1,176 Amsterdam citizens are among the pre-registrations. Besides this the ING Amsterdam Marathon every year rejoices over a rising number of foreign participants. Four years ago 2,700 foreign athletes took part; in 2004 4,620 and last year a record of 5,825. This year the Amsterdam Marathon Foundation expects to welcome ample 7,000 athletes from over a sixty nations. Great-Britain leads with already 1,405 runners, followed by France (478) and Germany (285), but also the interest from Spain (169) increases every year. The ING Amsterdam Marathon appears not only a great sports event of international airs, but also an event with economical importance for the city of Amsterdam. A lot of foreign participants and fans combine their visit to the marathon with a short holiday in the Dutch capital.
