Viktor Zyemstev from the Ukraine is the 2006 Ford Ironman USA Lake Placid Champion. The 33 year-old resident of Dade City, FL chased down Tom Evans on the marathon course. The Canadian had led most of the day and it was only in the last stages of the run that Evans was caught by the eventual winner.
Zyemstev posted a time of 8:38:18 with a marathon run of 2:48.20. Evans finished just over a minute later in a time of 8:39:12. Rutger Beke of Belgium came in third at 8:46:44 followed by Zyemtsev’s training partner and countryman Andriy Yastrebov at 8:57:23 Canadian Mike Neill finished in fifth place with a time of 8:57:44.
This is Zyemstev’s fifth Ironman title and the exuberant winner ran to the finish line smiling and ‘high fiving’ people in the crowd. Both Zyemstev and Evans thanked the enthusiastic crowd that lined the race-course for their support.

Ford Ironman USA Lake Placid is taking place for the eighth time on today in Lake Placid, New York. The 2006 Ford Ironman USA Lake Placid features a male only race for the pro athletes, alternating with Ford Ironman Coeur d’Alene which hosted the women’s race this year.
