CORNER BROOK, Newfoundland, Canada (July 31, 2006) - American age group duathletes doubled up their medal haul from a year ago, earning 22 podium finishes at the 2006 International Triathlon Union Duathlon World Championships in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, Canada on July 30.
The medal total for the 124 U.S. age groupers competing in the 10k run, 40k bike, 5k run course included eight golds, eight silvers, and six bronze. The 22 medals were the most of all the countries competing. Canada was second with 21.
Sarah Koldin (25-29) and Suzanne Huelster (Riverton, N.J.) (30-34) finished one-two overall in the women’s race and grabbed age group golds in the process. Elizabeth Fedofsky (Naperville, Ill.) finished fifth overall and earned silver behind Huelster in the 30-34 age group.
Diane Proud (Irving, Texas) (55-59), Judy Carroll (Kent, Ohio) (65-69), and Pat Fossum (Montgomery, Ala.) (70-74) also earned gold. Kerri Robbins (Davidsonville, Md.) (35-39) and Anne Mitchell (Bala Cynwyd, Pa.) (50-54) were silver medalists, while Barb Morgan (Tioga, Pa.) (60-64) earned bronze.
In the men’s race, Ryan Lindsay (25-29) finished second overall and grabbed an age group gold. Sean Ion (Shippenville, Pa.) finished second behind Lindsay in the 25-29 age group and was sixth overall.
Also earning gold medals for the men were Jeff Miller (Lewistown, Pa.) (35-39) and Edwin Bixenstine (Kent, Ohio) (80-84). Other male silver medalists were Brian Barker (Miamisburg, Ohio) (45-49), Warren Elvers Jr. (Getzville, N.Y.) (50-54), Lawrence Czelusta (San Antonio, Texas) (60-64), and Warren Taylor (Telford, Pa.) (65-69). Third place finishes went to David Williams (18-19), Ted Neidhardt (Galena, Ohio) (35-39), Don Alden (Lincoln, Mass.) (45-49), Dennis Kasischke (San Diego, Calif.) (60-64), and John Elliott (Columbia, Md.) (65-69).
Fossum is the only U.S. athlete to repeat as a world champion. Huelster, Morgan, and Bixenstine also podiumed in 2005 when U.S. athletes grabbed 11 total medals.
