Athletics: Wynne Named USATF Athlete of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS- William Wynne has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week after setting a Youth National and Junior Olympic record in both the men's 110 and 400-meter hurdles Sunday at the 2006 USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships in Hughes Stadium at Morgan State University in Baltimore, Md.

2006 USA Youth champion William Wynne of Titans Track in Powder Springs, Ga., won the Intermediate Boys 400-meter hurdles with his record-breaking time of 51.56 seconds. The previous Junior Olympic and National Youth record of 51.71 was set in 1996 by Bayano Kamani. Wynne then came back to claim the Junior Olympic and Youth National record in the Intermediate Boys 110-meter hurdles, winning in 13.83 seconds. Johnny Dutch set the previous record of 13.92 in 2005.

Also in Baltimore, 2005 World Youth champion Ebony Collins broke the Junior Olympic and National Youth record in the Young Women's 400-meter hurdles with her winning time of 57.78 seconds. The previous record of 57.94 was set in 2001 by Tiffany Ross (-Williams). Collins came back later in the day to win the 400 meters in 52.33 seconds.

Elsewhere, 2005 World silver medalist Sanya Richards continued her winning ways in the 400 meters by posting the fastest time in the world this year of 49.05 seconds. Richards now owns the three fastest times in the world this season.

Now in its sixth year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
