Mario Kröckert and Claudia Dreher won the 15th edition of the Vattenfall City Nacht on Berlin’s Kurfürstendamm. The race, which had 8,115 participants in various events, was followed by 40,000 spectators in the centre of Berlin.
In the men’s 10 k race Stefan Koch looked the likely winner with about 100 metres to go. But Germany’s number one 10 k road racer this season then made a bad mistake by following the lead car when it was directed off the course. Mario Kröckert took advantage from this mistake and won the event in 29:30 minutes. “I was really surprised when I saw Stefan suddenly turning away – it was easy for me afterwards”, Mario Kröckert said. After realizing his mistake in the rain Stefan Koch at least managed to secure thrid place in 29:38. German youngster Michael Schering had taken second place just one second behind Kröckert, who had clocked 29:04 earlier this season. Carsten Eich made this a complete German afair by finishing fourth in 29:54 minutes. Eich had won this race four times during his career and announced to end his career either at the end of this year or in spring 2007.
For Claudia Dreher the Vattenfall City Nacht was a perfect dress rehearshall for her marathon race at the European Championships next Saturday. The German marathon runner won the 10 k race on Kurfürstendamm in style with 33:52 minutes. After 1999, 2000 and 2005 this was already her fourth win of the Vattenfall City Nacht. “I am really happy and I am looking optimistically to next Saturday’s race. I have trained well in the heat so I don’t mind if it gets very warm in Gothenburg”, Claudia Dreher said. After seven kilometres she had left behind Melanie Kraus who took second place in 34:11. It was the winner of 2004, Poland’s Monika Drybulska, who came in third in 34:16. “It was amazing that there were that many spectators along the road despite the rainy weather”, Claudia Dreher said.
For the first time a mile race for German talents was included into the event. Falco Zauber (4:24 minutes) and Christina Kröckert (5:12) were the winners of this race which was started by the German mile record holder Jens-Peter Herold. “This is a great initiative and a motivation for youngsters”, Herold said.
