25 PROs have signed up so far for the Monaco Ironman 70.3. The race is ideally taking place 7 weeks ahead of the Ford Ironman World Championship in Hawaii and will be as exciting as a race with the World's top athletes can be.
The Monaco Ironman 70.3 presented by CAL Investments Limited attracts many PROs. The race leading the athletes through the hilly hinterland of the Principality to have them run along the world's most famous Formula 1 track has a great list of great names to present. Some of the top triathletes of our time will be there to see who they can beat just 7 weeks before the Ironman World Championships in Kona / Hawaii.
The Monaco Ironman 70.3 distributes 100 qualifying spots for the Ironman 70.3 World Championship 2006 in Clearwater/Florida AND 30 slots for every triathlete's ultimate dream: the Ford Ironman World Championship in Kona/Hawaii that will take place on October 13th 2007.
In the men's PRO field, we will see last year's champion Rutger Beke (BEL) trying to repeat his win on the Avenue de Monte Carlo. His landsman Luc Van Lierde (BEL) will try to be the one that crosses the Finishline first - and he has done so more than often. 5-times Ironman Champion Van Lierde won the World Championships in Hawaii twice and is the Ironman World Record holder (7:50:27). Tom Soderdahl (FIN), who placed 8th in his first Hawaii participation last year, will do everything to get in their way and make the Finishline Finnish. We will definitely have to watch out for Nicolas Lebrun (FRA), XTerra World Champion in 2005.
On the women's side, the race will be spectacular just as well. Three Ironman champions have signed up to run for the podium: Switzerland's three time Ironman Champion Karin Thürig (France 2002, Switzerland 2005, Lanzarote 2006) and double Duathlon World Champion (2001 and 2002) is up to grab for gold in Monaco. She will be challenged by Erika Csomor (HUN) who has won the Kärnten Ironman Austria in 2004 and is also a multiple duathlon World Champion (short distance 2001, 2004 short and long distance, long distance 2005). Both of them will have to manage to leave Rebecca Preston (AUS) behind. She has won her Ironman debut Ironman UK in 2005, and amazed the Ironman World when winning this year's Ironman Austria only two weeks after having won Ironman Switherland.
Marc Herremans will be back to Monaco as well. Marc has finished with the fastest time ever for a wheelchair athlete over the Ironman 70.3 distance in 4:40:49 in the Antwerp Ironman 70.3 earlier this year. The exceptional triathlete will be there to show once again: Anything is possible!
The registration for the Monaco Ironman 70.3 is open until August 15th on www.monaco-ironman.com.
