The reigning Olympic 5000m champion, Meseret Defar of Ethiopia, added the African Championships title to her resume today, setting back reigning world 5000m and 10,000m champion and her top Ethiopian rival, Tirunesh Dibaba.

In an extremely close and tactical race, Defar prevailed by just 4/100ths of a second, 15:56.00 to 15:56.04. The win snapped a five-race, 5000m winning streak for Dibaba which included narrow wins over Defar at the Golden Gala in Roma and the Meeting Gaz de France in Paris last month.

Sylvia Jebiwot Kibet of Kenya got the bronze medal in 15:57.14.
