GÖTEBORG (11-Aug) -- The European record holder in the steeplechase, Simon Vroemen of the Netherlands, will not line up for the final of that event tonight at the 19th European Championships here in Ullevi Stadium.

"He contracted food poisoning Wednesday afternoon," reported RRW correspondent Wilmar Kortleever who is here in Göteborg.

Vroemen, 37, won the silver medal at the championships in 2002 in Munich and was a medal favorite here tonight. Bouadbdellah "Bob" Tahri of France, Günther Weidlinger of Austria and Antonio David Jiménez of Spain should all be in the hunt for the title. Jiménez has the fastest season-best time of 8:11.52, and is the defending champion

The Dutch have earned just one medal at these championships, the silver awarded to Karin Ruckstuhl in the heptathlon.
