Athletics: Richmond’s Trey Henderson breaks Canadian youth record at Legion Track and Field Championships

August 12th 2006, BURNABY, B.C. - Trey Henderson of Richmond, B.C., broke his Canadian youth record in the men’s hammer throw on Saturday at the Legion Track and Field Championships youth nationals.

Henderson bettered his previous best set last year by two metres with a 67.45 metre toss to win the under-17 event.  Before Henderson, current Canadian champion James Steacy of Lethbridge, Alta., held the mark.  Angus Taylor of Richmond, B.C., was second at 59.41 and Maxime Haran of St-Eustache, Que., third at 56.02.

‘’That was my goal,’’ said Henderson, 16, also a tight end and defensive end with the Vancouver College football team.  ‘’The Legion meet has been my whole focus and it’s great to end my track season this way.  They have a new circle here and it works well for, I can really gain a lot of speed.  I couldn’t have asked for a better situation.’’

Competition, which is being held in the under-15 and under-17 age groups for men and women ends Sunday.
